Teeth and gum care are the basic foundation of oral health. Anyone who has ever been a dental patient has heard the instructions to brush and floss regularly and effectively. Dr. Christopher Lim and the dedicated staff at Hillside Dental in Las Vegas want to remind you that our goal is to assist you in maintaining your exceptional oral health. Our biggest gain from teaching proper teeth and gum care is the good health of you, our patient. So why is this so important?
The mouth is a breeding ground for many types of bacteria – some good, some bad. Most of what we introduce into our bodies passes through the mouth. What we eat and drink is one of the simple contributors to oral health. Water and raw vegetables are two of the ideal things we can put into our body that provide maximum benefit. In contrast, sugary drinks, candies, cakes, and cookies coat teeth with harmful, sticky substances, adhering to teeth more easily and leading to increased decay. If we go a step further, they do not offer much in the way of healthy nutrition either. When we choose sugary foods and drinks, promptly brushing and flossing become even more important. Any debris left behind will combine with bacteria and saliva and form plaque, which causes harmful deterioration. This is why regular examinations and professional cleanings by your dental provider are valuable, as well. A hygienist is trained to remove any buildup that forms in places we miss in daily care. This is extremely effective in decreasing the risk of gum disease, among other conditions.
Gum disease occurs when harmful plaque and bacteria are found on teeth and along the gum line, causing inflammation or infection. Left untreated, progression through the stages of gum disease can be devastating to patients’ oral health, and impact their physical health. Dental visits allow the provider to help teeth and gums remain in pristine condition, and to remind patients of any areas that should receive special attention in daily care. Taking heed to this advice will help avoid problems.
We hope to help patients understand that instructions to brush and floss regularly are indeed as important as we say as a dental provider.
